Do you need worker's comp for your farm apprentice? Can you insure land you are leasing from liable for injuries caused by your farming activities? Is insurance too expensive for your small operation? Can you be insured if you sell raw milk or poultry slaughtered on your farm? Join Kevin Bourdon from Co-op Insurance Companies, one of the primary insurers of farms in Vermont, to master the maze or insurance options for farm business owners. Kevin grew up on a dairy farm in Middlebury, VT, and now owns and operates a farm with his family in Waltham, VT. In early 1984, Kevin joined Co-op Insurance Companies. In this webinar, USDA NRCS animal scientist Karen Hoffman will describes how organic dairy farmers can maximize dry matter intake from the pasture. She will discuss the connection between milk production, a cow's rumen and pasture quality, including plant density, number of tillers/plants, pasture height, and species composition. She will take a look at protein and energy relationships in the pasture and ways to balance them to enhance dry matter intake and encourage high animal performance. This 4-session course is an in-depth study of backyard composting. Instructors are UVM faculty and professionals within Vermont's compost industry. Topics covered include: Biology of Composting, Worm Composting, Recipe Design, Compost use for Disease Control, Site and Container Selection, Managing the Compost Process, Trouble Shooting, and Education Outreach/Partnerships. Certified Master Composter volunteers assist students at each classroom. Students who wish to earn Vermont Certified Master Composter status must successfully complete the course, and earn 20 hours as volunteers in community projects. Interns will receive support and guidance from the UVM Home Horticulture Program and the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources staff.
